The central Susquehanna valley draws sharp contrasts throughout its towns. Some are economically prosperous, while others are stricken with poverty. The way people earn their living is changing. Natural gas extraction and transportation form the foundation of modern central Pennsylvania's economy. These industries create jobs, but some wealth generated from them is leaving the state. Central PA's economy is dynamic and complex, and serves to provide for all of its people.

State of the Economy​

 

An overview of the state of the economy over the past years. Central Pennsylvania's transition over the years to different types of resource extraction has led to significant changes in its economic structure. Coal town workers of the past have been supplanted by temporary shale gas extraction workers today.

Poverty​

 

Poverty is a very real situation for many in the central Susquehanna valley. Poverty is pervasive and affects many aspects of life. Data concerns both direct indicators like household income, and indirect measures like percentage of children with free or reduced school lunch fees. 

Growing Parts of the Economy​

 

The regional economy is still growing and adapting to its place in the modern marketplace. Jobs and revenue from logistics and shale gas offer new oppurtuinties for growth across the state. New town models focus on tourism and seek to replicate the success of other towns in the region. Growth opportunities exist in the central Susquehanna valley.
